The Portuguese gag acts the same as a snaffle bit. Attaching the reins to the bottom ring creates more leverage making the bit ideal for maintaining control of your horse. When the reins are placed on the lower ring, poll pressure is increased and encourages the horse to lower the head. If the horse pulls whilst wearing the waterford, the mouthpiece is uncomfortable and usually the horse will not lean on it.
Most horses work better in one size larger than their normal bit size when ridden in a waterford mouthpiece. Exerts poll pressure and a limited gag action.
